Isaiah chapters 6-12 are overflowing with prediction, containing some of the most famous references in the Old Testament to the coming Messiah. Covering a time in Judah's history when it was being attacked and threatened on all sides, each chapter is full of rich biblical truths, revealing the character of Yahweh and His plan for His children. Although the remnant of His people would be reduced to a stump, a shoot would come forth - Immanuel, God with us.

______________

Ralph Davis is such a gem among commentary writers and he has done so again with Stump Kingdom. He works through a tricky section of Isaiah with clarity, wit, and pastoral heart. It seems like every page or two has a compelling illustration (especially drawn from Davis' wide reading in history.) If you have appreciated his commentaries, this is just classic Davis ... compelling interpretation of the text without getting lost in Hebrew vocabulary or endless scholarly debate, although from the occasional footnotes you can see that Davis has interacted with the serious academic commentaries... I joyfully recommend this book for anybody - unlike most commentaries on Isaiah, this is not just for pastors and academics by any means. Read Stump Kingdom and get a greater love for God through the promises of his coming Messiah in this ancient work. S. Thompson
