I wish I had discovered this book years ago. Bruce was a powerful theologian and preacher in Scotland. The sermons are from 1589, but if the thought of reading such old sermons concerns you, rest assured. The translation is easy to read, yet the power of his delivery and the truth of his theology shine through. He does the church a great service in the way he unpacks the relation between the sign (bread & wine) and the thing signified (Christ.) And his pastor's heart is apparent in the way he repeatedly calls for repentant hearts to come to the table to receive spiritual food. Yet his focus remains always on Christ and his finished work on the cross. If you take communion, if you share in the Lord's Supper, and if you want to understand what you are doing when you eat the bread and wine, then you will be greatly encouraged and strengthened by this book. If you are a pastor who has the privilege of preaching the Word and distributing the Lord's Supper, you will find in this book heaps of sermon inspiration and clarifying exposition to edify yourself and your flock.
